Art therapists help individuals gain access to complex psychological concerns and heal from psychological wounds through the artistic process and product.
Art therapists do not tell individuals what their artwork means. Artwork analysis (or understanding the meaning of artwork) is a collaborative process, and ultimately meaning comes from the creator. Talent or artistic skill is not a requirement of art therapy work as it is an expressive pursuit. Art and dreams alike are the product of an individual's psyche. Art allows us to gain access to your truest pains, needs, urges, and desires. In art therapy with me you will have the opportunity to use a variety of art media such as paint, clay, chalk, oil pastels, collage, found materials, and more. Through art making we will begin to illustrate your narrative in a way that is contained and safe. Sometimes words alone aren't enough to access parts of your psyche. THE AIM OF ART IS TO REPRESENT NOT THE OUTWARD APPEARANCE OF THINGS, BUT THEIR INWARD SIGNIFICANCE." -ARISTOTLE |
